Role Summary

Prefect is defining automation for the context era. We build the infrastructure that powers 100K+ mission-critical workflows every minute, and our mission is to curate the context layer that delivers the right information to AI systems at the right time.

We're hiring senior product engineers to keep building it.

This is a product engineering role. You'll own features end to end, from understanding the user problem to designing the flow to shipping working code backed by solid full-stack implementation. There's no dedicated PM at Prefect. Engineers on these teams are the product owners. You'll stay close to customers, develop a sharp read on the orchestration and AI tooling markets, partner with other product engineers and Prefect's leadership, and make the product calls along the way.

You'll report to one of Prefect's Directors of Engineering.

What You'll Do

  • Own end-to-end product features. From user problem to design to shipped code. You define what "done" looks like.

  • Make product calls. Without a dedicated PM in the room, you decide what to build, what to defer, and what good enough looks like for now.

  • Build for production. Backend systems, APIs, and the UI needed to make them usable. Think about durability, performance, and the long-term shape of what you're building.

  • Be a constant presence with customers. Run discovery calls, listen in on support, watch how people actually use what you've shipped, turn what you learn into the next thing.

  • Stay close to the markets we're in. Know where they're going, not just where they are. Form and defend opinions.

  • Ship with AI tooling at the core of your workflow. Claude Code, Codex, background agents, evals, and the broader stack. Bring opinions about plan review, PR review of agent-authored code, and where humans should stay in the loop.

  • Participate in on-call and incident response. Help maintain production reliability standards.

Your Qualifications

  • 5+ years of fullstack engineering experience, with demonstrated success shipping production systems you helped shape, not just implement.

  • Comfort owning the product. You've talked to customers, made the calls, and shipped things where you defined the problem and the solution.

  • Strong fullstack chops in either Python or TypeScript. Distributed systems, comfort with whatever databases and infra a feature demands. You can speak to scaling stories, schema decisions, and the tradeoffs you've made.

  • Real fluency with AI development tools. You've already shipped meaningful work with Claude Code, Codex, or equivalent, and you can speak to where these tools earn their keep and where they don't.

  • Track record of shipping in high-ambiguity, early-stage environments. Comfortable with incomplete information and fast iteration.

  • Equally comfortable shipping a rough prototype to test an idea and hardening production code that users depend on.

  • Self-directed with strong judgment. You identify problems, propose solutions, and ship, while keeping the team aligned through clear communication.
